Bishop, Manuel Sánchez Monge

On May 6, 2015, The Vatican announced that Pope Francis appointed Manuel Sánchez Monge bishop of the Diocese of Santander (Spain).

Bishop Monge was born in the Palencia town of Fuentes de Nava in 1947, entered the Minor Seminary and carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the Diocesan Major Seminary of Palencia, receiving his priestly ordination on August 9, 1970. He studied Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University from Rome, where he obtained, in 1974, a degree, with a thesis on the infallibility of the pope; and, in 1998, the doctorate, with a thesis on “The family, domestic Church”. He is also an author of various publications. Besides Spanish, he speaks Italian and reads French and English.

Vicente Jiménez Zamora The Spanish Apostolic Nunciature announced to the Spanish Conference of Bishops at 12:00 pm today, Friday the 27th of July, 2007, previously bishop of Osma-Soria. He took charge of the diocese in September, exactly one year after his pre-decessor, Msgr. José Vilaplana, who was transferred to the Diocese of Huelva after 15 years of episcopal ministry in Santander.
